About Alan HarmanWork with a leaderAlan Harman is an investment advisor who believes that superior portfolio performance can be achieved by investing in companies that understand the risks and rewards of environmental and social issues. Since he began managing client assets in 1987, Alan has integrated environmental and social criteria into his investment decision-making process. During the late 1980's and early 1990's he was involved in most socially responsible investing forums and organizations in Canada. He was one of the very few retail portfolio managers using the Ethicscan database on corporate social ethics. When Jantzi Research was formed, Alan was an "early adopter" and partner in their work. In 1992 Alan hosted and moderated "Investing in the Environment" - a series of public seminars featuring leading environmentalists such as Colin Isaacs. Alan has played an active role in many social change organizations in Toronto and the Green Party of Canada. He is the Founder and President of the "Alma Children's Education Foundation" (www.almafoundation.ca). Recently he helped craft Ontario's first community solar energy project under the Green Energy Act (nominated for a Green Toronto award) and he volunteers at the "Out of the Cold" program. Alan’s advisory business adheres to responsible and sustainable principles. With the help of Zerofootprint he has reduced his energy consumption and "offset" the balance with carbon credits. He purchases clean energy from Bullfrog Power for his home and office at ScotiaPlaza, and commutes by bicycle. He adheres to the Imagine Campaign's caring company guidelines by donating 1% of pre-tax earnings to charities and not-for-profits. Alan’s unique approach to Socially Responsible Investing has earned him recognition as a speaker, media commentator, and trusted investment advisor to socially aware individuals, charities and foundations across Canada. |
